How to install side mount barn door tracks

8 Easy steps to barn door success

At Rolltrak, we have a wide variety of styles when it comes to barn door tracks, but one of our most popular options is the side mount model. These kinds of barn door tracks come in many attractive finishes, including matte black, satin nickel, stainless steel, white, brushed brass, and antique brass. In addition, you can choose from several side mount styles, including arrowhead, horseshoe, big wheel, or round. Installing barn door tracks will be easy when you follow the instructions below and consult the diagrams in our product information document.

 Tools used:

• Drill
• Tape measure
• Level
• Pencil
• Phillips head screwdriver
• 2.5mm, 3.2mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 10mm high-speed steel drill bit
• 8mm and 10mm masonry drill bit

Step 1:

Mark measurements for masonry installation, ensuring guiding marks are level. Drill holes at intervals of 450mm using a 10mm masonry drill bit. The height of the holes should be the door height plus an additional 43mm. 

Step 2:

Predrill studs with a 6mm metal drill bit. 

Handy hint: Do not over-tighten coach screws into the plasterboard to avoid causing damage to the wall surface.

Step 3:

Mark your door at the point of 40mm down the door edge, then another 90mm down the door edge. Measure across the door 150mm. Drill your holes using a 10mm drill bit. 

Handy hint: You may wish to cover this area of your door with masking tape first to protect it. The tape can be removed after drilling the holes. 

Step 4:

Screw the anti-bounce guide over the edge.

Step 5:

Install the door, then rotate guides to fit flush with the door.

Step 6:

Screw your floor guide into position. Your door should already have a slot on the bottom edge of your door for your floor guide to run along. If it doesn’t, you will need to uninstall the door and use a router to create this feature. 

Step 7:

You will need to add anti-jump stops on the barn door track, so the door does not come off the track.

Step 8:

Plug extra holes with blanking plugs provided. 

Handy hint: The track is supplied with predrilled 450mm hole spacings. If you have a stud wall, you must ensure you affix the track to the studs. This may mean redrilling the track.
