How to replace screen door rollers

Have you started noticing that your security screen door isn’t sliding as smoothly as it used to? Rather than replacing the entire door, you might find that the fix is as easy as installing new screen door rollers. 

This quick and easy guide on how to replace them will have you wishing you’d invested in some brand-new screen door rollers much sooner. It might even have you checking the other sliding doors around the home.

What you’ll need

• A friend (to help lift the door)
• Philips head screwdriver
• Flat head screwdriver
• Can of WD-40
• Cloth
• Rolltrak carriage and roller

Step 1: Identify the issue

Like with any DIY repair, you need to work out what the issue is first. That way, you potentially save yourself time and money on an unnecessary repair. 

Start by removing the door from the track and frame. To do this, you need to loosen the rollers. Locate the roller screws. There should be two at the top and two at the bottom, on the inside of the door. Then, with your Philips head, turn them clockwise. This will retract the wheel toward the door. 

Now, with your friend’s help, remove the door and lay it horizontally in a safe, elevated place. With your cloth and WD-40, clean the carriage (which is the hardware that holds the door rollers) and the door track. Inspect the screen door rollers. If they’re bent or broken, you’ll need to replace them. 

Step 2: Remove the carriages

Find the tabs on your carriages, which are located on either side of the wheel. With your flat head, press the tab while gently pulling on the carriage. It should pop out easily. Keep these handy, as you’ll need them for the next step. 

Step 3: Find the matching carriage from our range

To find the right replacement carriage from Rolltrak’s range, you need to measure your carriage and roller. When you’ve found the matching carriage, click the 1:1 PRODUCT PDF button. This will give you a printout of the carriage you can physically match with your old carriage. 

Once you’ve matched the carriage, pop into your local Bunnings to buy it.

Step 4: Install the new carriages

Insert the new carriages, making sure the tabs click into place. Next, retract the rollers. Doing this allows you to reattach the door to the tracks easily. 

Step 5: Reattach the door

Give the tracks another clean with your cloth and WD-40. Then, lift the door with your friend’s help and place it back on the tracks. Once the door is correctly aligned, lower the screen door rollers with your Philips head. Turn the screws counterclockwise. 

Lastly, test the door to make sure it rolls smoothly. You may need to adjust the roller height to achieve this.
