White Sliding Barn DoorEssential maintenance tips for cleaning and replacing barn door hardware

Barn doors are well-known for their rustic appeal and space-saving design. But like all features in your home, they need proper care and attention to keep them looking and functioning at their best.

As the go-to for all your barn door hardware and accessories, we’ve put together some tips to help you clean and maintain your barn doors for a longer life and a smoother slide.

Maintaining your barn door hardware

Maintaining the hardware of your barn door is just as important as cleaning the door itself. Dust and debris can build up over time, especially on the tracks and rollers, which can impede the operation of your door.

Use a microfiber cloth to regularly dust the barn door tracks. For a deeper clean, you can carefully vacuum the tracks and rollers to remove any loose debris. Then, apply a mild detergent and scrub gently with a small brush to dislodge any stubborn grime.

Replacing your barn door hardware

Over time, the moving parts of barn doors, like tracks and rollers, can wear down, making it difficult to open and close. Sometimes these issues are fixable with proper cleaning, but other times you might need to replace some of the barn door hardware.

Sliding issues: If your barn door isn’t opening effortlessly, it might be time to inspect the tracks and rollers. Dirt and debris can build up, so cleaning these parts regularly can help. If cleaning doesn’t resolve the issue, it could be a sign of worn-out hardware. Our tracks and rollers are top-quality replacements that ensure a seamless slide.

Door swinging out: If your sliding barn door is swinging, it can be both a nuisance and a hazard. A faulty or absent floor guide could be the culprit. Our floor guide is designed for easy installation and can bring back the steadiness your door needs.

Door slamming shut: To prevent your barn door from slamming shut and causing potential damage to the door and frame, consider installing a soft closer. A soft closer slows down the door movement, reducing the impact when it reaches the end of its run.

Cleaning different types of barn doors

Barn doors can come in many shapes, sizes, and materials. So, it’s important to recognise and understand this when it comes to cleaning and maintaining them. Here’s how to keep each type of barn door looking spotless.

Glass barn doors: Spray a glass cleaner or a vinegar-water solution on the glass surface, and wipe the glass with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. Pay attention to cleaning the edges and corners as well.

Wooden barn doors: Wipe the surface using a soft, damp cloth to get rid of dirt or dust. For any stubborn stains, use a mild soap and water solution. Then, dry the door thoroughly with a clean cloth to prevent moisture damage. Avoid any harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the paint or finish.

Metal barn doors: Remove dust and debris from steel or iron doors using a soft cloth or duster. You can clean the metal surface with a gentle metal cleaner or a mixture of mild soap and water. Just make sure to dry the door completely to prevent rusting.

MDF barn doors: Dust the surface with a soft cloth or duster regularly. To remove stains, use a mild detergent mixed with water and wipe gently. Then, dry to avoid swelling or warping.

Enhancing barn door aesthetics

Beyond maintenance and repairs, upgrading your barn door hardware can also enhance the door’s functionality and aesthetics.

Barn door handles: The right handle can dramatically enhance the overall look of your door. Choose barn door handles that match your style and offer a comfortable grip for opening and closing.

Barn door latches: For added privacy, our stylish latches also add character to your barn door. They combine robust functionality with stylish design, ensuring they complement your barn door rather than detract from it.

Barn door maintenance doesn’t have to be a challenging task. With the right knowledge, tools, and hardware, you can keep your doors looking great and operating smoothly for years to come.
